Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
834 PM MST Fri Jan 17 2025

.DISCUSSION...Clouds remain over many of the mountainous areas
this evening, but most folks are seeing mostly clear skies.
Tonight will be the coldest night of January, and even the
entire winter season so far, for much of the area. All this is
handled well by the current forecast and no update will be done
at this time.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR most sites through Saturday morning, the
exception being mtn-valleys where fog development is possible
closer to sunrise Saturday morning. Surface winds: NW 10-20 kt
with gusts to 30 kt through 18/05Z. Gusts to 25 kt continue
east of KMUO through 18/12Z. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: NW-N
20-35 kt.

KBOI...VFR with light northwest wind, becoming variable around
18/14Z.

Sunday Outlook...VFR with dry and cold conditions. Winds will be
weaker Sunday compared to Saturday.

&&

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night...Breezy conditions
will continue tonight with the strongest winds anchored across
portions of the Snake Plain east of Boise where gusts to 45 mph
are possible through early evening. Winds will settle down
overnight, relaxing in the western Magic Valley around sunrise
on Saturday. With the region remaining on the western fringe of
an Arctic air mass, the next several days will see most sites
reach the coldest temperatures of the season so far. Sunday
night is still on tap to be the coldest following a reinforcing
push of Arctic air the spills over the Continental Divide on
Sunday. Temperatures through the period will run 10-15 degrees
below normal.

LONG TERM...Monday through Friday...Cold northerly flow on
Monday will relax Tuesday as a shortwave ridge/trough couplet
pushes in from the Pac NW coast. The trough passage is dry as
it tracks across the ID panhandle and has little accompanying
moisture. Higher elevations will see some warming in response to
the leading shortwave ridge, while cold air remains trapped at
lower elevations. Wednesday and Thursday will see better mixing
before the ridge axis moves overhead on Friday. Temperatures
remain 5-10 degrees below normal through Wednesday, rising to
near normal Thur/Fri.
